Voyage Using Ammonia as Bunker Fuel

Mills Navigation, under the umbrella of DNV Singapore, provided technical support on the site selection assessment for the GREEN PIONEER sea trials in Singapore waters and recommended potential venues for the vessel commissioning.  The project analysis included the following components:

  • Study/review of  relevant/current documentation.

  • Safe access for the  vessel  to the proposed  location.

  • Emergency departure from the proposed site to  an area of safety.

  • Vessel traffic analysis using AIS data.

  • Metocean conditions and bathymetry.

  • Passing vessel issues and the use of Marine Exclusion or  Safety Zones.

  • Pilotage requirements.

  • Routing from the proposed loading/bunkering location  (from shore  tank/tanker or  STS) to the proposed  commissioning site.

Fortescue’s GREEN PIONEER, billed as the world’s first ammonia dual-powered ship, left Singapore in January of 2025 on a voyage past the Cape of Good Hope en route initially to Southampton, both for Port State Control and to demonstrate the use of ammonia in its engines to the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The vessel then proceeded to London’s Canary Wharf where it stayed through mid-April before travelling to other north European ports.

The Green Pioneer went onto conduct a world tour highlighting the alternative marine fuels.
