  • 40 years of seagoing and consultancy experience. Master Mariner and Class 1 Marine Pilot on the Thames Estuary and the River Medway. Seagoing experience includes container ships, tankers, PSV/AHTS, ammunition/troop carriers and LNGCs. Royal Navy SPEC N.  Senior Trainer in charge of the Pilot training program for Peel Ports London Medway, with extensive use of Full Mission Bridge Simulators (FMBS).

    Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation, a Freeman of the City of London with the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and a member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying.

    Deputy Harbour Master for the Medway Competent Harbour Authority, implementing all aspects of the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC) and ISPS.

    Chairman and member of the United Kingdom Maritime Pilots Association Technical and Training (T&T) Committee, overseeing T&T guidelines to all UK pilots on the use of ECDIS, tug use in port, CPD training and implemented the adoption of safer use of pilot ladders being ratified by IMO.

  • A military seagoing Captain with over 35 years’ experience and a proven track record in delivering complex, fast evolving operational programmes in Defence.

    Possessing recent Command experience in three HM Ships (Destroyer and Aircraft Carriers). Conversant in sea going Safety Case Management, Safe to Operate and Operating Safely governance.  

    Qualified as an Royal Navy Specialist Navigator and served with the Fleet Operational Sea Training organisation tasked with the coaching and development of Bridge Teams, Bridge Management and standards of watchkeeping.  

    Served as a Senior Naval Advisor to UK Government Department of Business and Trade providing professional military advice on operations, equipment and procurement to support other Government Departments, the Defence Industry and overseas clients.

  • A maritime professional with over 40 years’ experience at sea, world-wide foreign going container vessels, oil product tankers and reefer/general cargo vessels. 

    Mid-career, employed on ROPAX ferries transiting the Dover Straits, loading and trading within several European Ports.

    Latterly as a Marine Pilot for 27 years, gained extensive ship handling experience berthing and unberthing many types of vessels from coasters to large car carriers, container and LNGCs up to QMax. Safe navigation within port limits as a specialism, a deep understanding of the Master-Pilot relationship and exchange of information leading to thousands of safe Pilotage Acts.

    Membership of professional committees and representing Ports engaging with customers and port users within the districts. 

    During a period as a Deputy Harbourmaster/Pilot in a major UK ferry/cargo port enabled strengthening of knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code and ISPS requirements ensuring compliance from a senior management perspective. 

Specialist Consultants

  • A senior Marine Consultant with Port Operations, Security and Vessel Traffic Service specialisations.

    Comprehensive knowledge of Private and Trust Port Statutory responsibilities and working practices.

    Over 20 years’ experience of Managing Port Operations for three UK Harbour Authorities, including the operation of an LNG importation and exportation terminal, an LPG Storage facility, High and Low Flash Point petroleum product storage facilities and extensive commercial port operations.

    Extensive experience as the Port Facility Security Officer for the Harbour Authorities working alongside UK Government (Department of Transport) officials, UK Security Authorities and other port terminal PFSOs as part of the Port Security Authority groups.

    Responsible for maintaining operational maritime security oversight of all commercial berth locations under ISPS and the PMSC. Creating and maintaining Port Facility Security Plans in line with current legislation and formal Risk Assessment Procedures.

    Comprehensive knowledge of VTS management including responsibility for VTS training and standards, compliance with all applicable VTS/ISPS/PMSC codes and guidelines.

  • 45 years’ experience in the marine engineering industry.

    Expertise include terminal/berth/jetty construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance primarily in Oil/Gas Oil, Bulk Cargo, Containers and Ro-Ro Freight.

    22 years specialising in the LNG industry as a Mechanical Engineer for the construction and commissioning of LNG terminals.

    Marine Manager for National Grid at Grain LNG. Responsible for managing all aspects of the terminal ‘wet side’ operations including liaising with Pilots, towage companies, Port Authorities, commercial teams, management of the Terminal Vessel Approval Policy (compatibility and mooring studies) and overseeing the Ship to Shore Interface.

    Developed the management of teams of Marine Loading Masters to ensure scheduled maintenance and repairs of jetty equipment (including marine loading arms, fender/mooring/berthing equipment and associated systems) is given the highest priority.

    Oversaw the creation of Marine Terminal Operating Procedures and Work Instructions for all Marine Operations. These procedures work alongside the HSE, COMAH, DoT, Counter Terrorism Police, Port Security Authorities, Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure.

    Leads working groups to create guidelines and industry best practices within the LNG industry SIGTTO, OCMF, GIIGNL and SGMF

  • Highly qualified operational Marine Engineer / Surveyor with 37 years of experience.

    24 sea-going years with the Royal Navy; Chief Marine Engineering Artificer.

    12 years in the commercial marine consultancy sector as Principal Surveyor and Offshore Client Representative.  

    Dual qualified with Sea-Safety certificates for both Offshore Energy Industries (Wind (GWO) and Oil & Gas(OPITO)). 

    Served on destroyers, frigates and ice patrol vessels, rising from Junior Marine Engineering Mechanic 2nd Class to Chief Marine Engineering Artificer. 

    Expertise on a wide range of propulsion systems including steam, gas turbine, diesel & diesel electric plus all support / auxiliary systems, hull / structure and hotel services.

  • 50 years in the maritime towage sector, a tug Master with command of Voith tractors, Azimuthing Stern Drive, Combi Tug, Single, twin and triple screw harbour and seagoing tugs.

    Tug Master services for Ship Simulator at HR Wallingford. Projects include Hong Kong LNG, Yarmouth Bridge, Lowestoft Wind Turbine berths, Mozambique LNG, Thames Tideway, Gulf LNG and two Nuclear Power station projects.

    Port Manager (Medway) responsible for towing operations in the port and offshore.

    Maritime training lead and Simulator training specialist for HR Wallingford, Marin and Force ASD Tug Simulators.

    Salvage services as Tug Master and Salvage Team member.

    Evaluation of LNG Terminal tugs for BP, Hyproc, South Hook LNG, BG and Centrica.
