GCMD Ammonia Bunkering Safety Studies

The safety studies provided a comprehensive assessment of risks involved in the Ship-to-Ship ammonia transference in Singapore waters, as well as made the necessary recommendations for detailed appropriate risk management.

In continuation of the successful delivery for GCMD’s Ammonia Bunkering project Phase 1 in Singapore, Mills Navigation carried out safety studies for the physical ammonia bunkering trials - Phase 2.

The Scope of Work consisted of performing the following safety studies for ammonia breakbulk/bunkering operations across 2 vessels:

  • HAZID

  • HAZOP

  • Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA)

  • Navigation Risk Assessment (NRA)

  • CFD Ammonia Dispersion Assessment

Mills Navigation’s role under the DNV umbrella was to partake in the HAZID, HAZOP, QRA and conduct the NRA.

The project brief consisted of performing a Navigational Risk Assessment (NRA) study for ammonia transfer to identify potential hazardous events. The two feasible operational concepts take place in port waters at the selected trial locations - the Raffles Reserve Anchorage (ARAFR) and offshore Pilbara Australia, including the following scenarios:

    • Breakbulk operation across 2 vessels (Navigator Aries to Navigator Genesis)

    • Bunkering operation using the 2 vessels as proxy (Navigator Genesis to Navigator Aries)
